Mayor offers solution to Salt Lake water crisis

KOLKATA, 3 NOV: In a bid to solve the acute water problem that Salt Lake suffers from, the mayor, Mr Sovan Chatterjee said today that within a span of three to four months, 2.5-3 million gallon water a day would be supplied to Salt Lake and 1 to 1.5 million gallon water would be supplied to Sector V alone from Polta water treatment plant.
He was addressing the Bijoy Sammelan programme organised by the Bidhannagar Municipality at Bidyut Bhawan auditorium today. The mayor also said that in one to one-and-a-half years, Salt Lake, Dumdum and South Dumdum municipality would get 20 million gallon water from Polta. He also said that projects have been taken up to get more water from Tallah to Salt Lake.
The municipality supplies about 90 lakh gallon of water daily in the township at present, out of which about 65 lakh gallon comes from Tallah.
“These measures would hopefully solve the water crisis in Salt Lake. We have also taken up a project under which Salt Lake would get 20 million gallon water by 2023,” said Mr Chatterjee. He also said that the work at the Tallah water treatment plant is almost complete. “A portion of pipeline is yet to be laid and I am personally looking after the work,” he added.
He also said that steps are being taken to improve the infrastructure at the SAI complex in Salt Lake.
