Deputy director of Alipore Zoo ‘attacked’

KOLKATA, 13 JUNE: The deputy director of Alipore Zoological Gardens, Ms Piyali Chatterjee, alleged that Mr Rakesh Singh, the general secretary of the Intuc-affiliated Kolkata Zoological Garden Employees’ Association, today, heckled her. On her way to a hospital, she said that she was attacked on the zoo premises where Mr Singh and other members of the employees’ association were staging a demonstration.
Mr Rakesh Singh, however, said that there was no such incident and it was the deputy director who had abused him verbally. He alleged that two employees of the union were called by Ms Chatterjee to her residence at 9 p.m. last night where she offered them Rs 25,000 each and a government job. “The employees were told that Rakesh Singh’s union would soon cease to exist and if they wanted to remain in their job, they would have to sign on a blank paper,” he added. The two employees signed the papers and came back with the money. When Mr Singh came to know of the incident in the morning, he informed the director of the Kolkata Zoological Garden, Mr Raju Das, that the members of the employees’ association would hold a protest meet in front of the director’s office from 2 p.m. today. Police were also present at the spot.
When Ms Chatterjee entered her office at 2 p.m. and saw that Mr Singh and his supporters were present there with flags, she allegedly started abusing them verbally and used foul language. A heated exchange of words ensued. Later, Ms Chatterjee alleged that Mr Singh beat her up. She also rubbished the allegations levelled by Mr Singh.
The O-C of the Watgunge police station said that no complaint was lodged in this connection and that the protesters had left after submitting a deputation. Mr Raju Das denied any such incident and said that there was a protest but he did not know of anybody being beaten up. He termed the whole incident wastage of work hours.
