Kabir Suman sings a sarcastic tune over Jagori’s surrender

KOLKATA, 21 NOV: At a time when chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee has launched a tirade against Maoist sympathisers in the city, Trinamul Congress MP from Jadavpur ~ Kabir Suman ~ has penned a song expressing despair over dreaded Maoist squad leader Jagori Baske’s surrender.
The song ~ A Song For Jagori Baske ~ was uploaded on Kabir Suman’s personal website ~ http://www.kabirsumanonline.com ~ on 18 November. “As usual I wrote the words first and then put them to tune,” wrote Kabir Suman who aimed his sarcasm at the government and media.
He sings: “Jagori elen, bhorosha pelen, atmoshomorpon er daam. Sarkar debe, media o nebe Jagori Baske’r mishti naam. Jagori apni ghor bedhe nin, chhele k pathan school e, golpo korun mon khule. (Thus came Jagori, awarded with trust (on the government), government will give and media will take Jagori Baske’s sweet name. Jagori you have a home now, send your son to school. Talk to people without fear.” The lines that follow are, “apnar (Jagori) chhele montrir kole…ami konodin lorai korini, boka boka gaan badchhi tai. Shunun Jagori, chena Salbon, hoyeto gaaichhe tomake chai. (Your son on a minister’s lap.. I have never fought and so I pen songs. But listen Jagori, your Sal forests may be singing that it needs you.)”
Jagori Baske and her husband Rajaram Soren, Maoists, gave up arms on Thursday at Writers’ Buildings with Miss Banerjee by her side. The couple came with their son Bahadur Baske. Jagori was named in about 30 cases, including murder, looting arms and abduction. She was allegedly involved in the abduction and murder of police officer Partha Biswas and teacher Saumyajit Basu in Purulia in 2010.
Though the state government has claimed the surrender as a major breakthrough in its fight against the rebels, several stories have been doing the rounds that Jagori was compelled to surrender after police got their hand on her ailing son.
Miss Banerjee during her Purulia visit had warned the “Maoists sympathisers” operating from Kolkata, including “two Jadavpur University professors”. She had said: “Those who are trying to glorify the Maoists would be arrested.”
Mr Prasanta Haldar, South Kolkata representative of the Association For Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR), hailed the song and congratulated Kabir Suman on not giving in to the party diktat. “It is his poetic freedom. He is right and we congratulate him on penning such a song,” he said.
Kabir Suman could not be contacted.

‘No action against MP till LS poll’
KOLKATA, 21 NOV: Displeased with his open sympathies for Maoists, chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee today once again criticised her party MP, Kabir Suman, while making it clear that she will not take any action against him till the next Parliamentary elections. “I can expel him in a second for glorifying Maoists or suspend him but then it will benefit him. I have already apologised to the people of Jadavpur for my mistake and we have not utilised him during the Assembly election. We will do something during the next poll,” said the CM. She added: “He has already composed songs in praise of Chatradhar Mahato and Jagori Baske. Now that Jagori has surrendered I do not know whether he will be singing a different tune now.” Reacting to Miss Banerjee’s comments of Kabir Suman, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Dr Surjya Kanta Mishra said: “The CM is asking Maoist operatives to surrender and join the mainstream and her party MP is composing songs on Jagori Baske asking her to return to the jungles! The CM only makes self-contradictory statements.”
